Mr. Zachary Allan Ray, age 57 of Augusta, Georgia formally of Carrollton died Saturday, December 21, 2019 at University Hospital in Augusta, Georgia.
Mr. Ray was born in Berlin, Germany on March 2, 1962, the son of the late Morris L. Ray and Frances G. Ray. He graduated from Carrollton High School, Class of 1980.
Zach started an early career that he loved and cherished. At the age of 13 working weekends and shifts no one could work at WPPI. Mark McCain was a big influencer for Zach being a mentor. Zach also worked at the local WLBB and WBTR. Then in 1986 he landed a job at Y 106 in Atlanta. He got his name "General Zach Taylor" working several shifts and weekend promo's at car dealerships along with country singer John Berry. They were known as "The Carlot Boys". Zach would do air breaks live and John Berry would sing.
In 1988 Zach got the country morning show on WCHY in Savannah. His career really boosted here. Emceeing concerts and sporting events, St. Patrick's Day Parade, etc. In 1997 he started at Kicks 99/ Augusta, Georgia. He emceed all kinds of events and concerts like George Jones, Randy Travis, Alabama, The Judd's, Dolly Parton, Lady Antebellum, Rascal Flatts, Jason Aldean Faith Hill, Taylor Swift, Tim McGraw, Travis Tritt, Confederate Railroad, Marie Osmond (to name a few, the list goes on and on).
Zach worked for the Beasley Broadcasting Group in Augusta for 22 years of his more than 30 year radio career. He loved the Georgia Bulldogs, the Atlanta Falcons and the Atlanta Braves.
Survivors include his brother and sister-in-law, Vince and Judy Ray of Carrollton; nephew and fiancé, Christopher Hicks and Avery Taylor; uncles, David Gilley of Carrollton, Doug Ray of Jemison, Alabama; aunts, Evelyn Barron of Carrollton, Kathryn Moore of Carrollton, Louise Estep of Bowdon, Louise Lowery of Alabaster, Alabama, Tommie White of Mountain Brook, Alabama and numerous cousins. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by several aunts, uncles and cousins.
The family will receive friends at Almon Funeral Home on Thursday, December 26 from 5 pm until 8 pm.
Funeral service will be Friday, December 27 at 2 p.m. at Midway Church with Pastor Steve Schneider officiating and eulogies offered by past and current co-workers.
Pallbearers will be Jeff Barron, Chris O'Kelley, Tee Gentry, Jason Spruill, Bryan Axelson and Jim Meeks. Honorary pallbearers will be his co-workers and radio personalities.
Interment will be in Carroll Memory Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Jud C. Hickey Center for Alzheimer's Care, 1901 Central Ave., Augusta, GA 30904.
A celebration of life service will be held in Augusta at a later date.
