Wendell Ray Mashburn, age 74 of Carrollton, Georgia, passed away on Sunday, February 11, 2024, surrounded by his loved ones. Born on April 13, 1949, in Carroll County, Georgia, he was the son of the late Gurtis W. Mashburn and Viola Bell Chieves Mashburn.
Wendell graduated from Central High School and went on to serve his country as a proud veteran in the U.S. Army. He served in the CO.A 1/502 101st Airborne Division during the Vietnam War from July 1969 until December 1970 obtaining the rank of Sgt. After his military service, Wendell embarked on a dedicated career spanning 43 years with Georgia Power. Additionally, he generously gave his time as a volunteer firefighter for Station 12 in Lowell.
An avid outdoorsman, Wendell found solace and joy in planting, working outside, and collecting coins. He cherished moments spent with family and friends, engaging in lively conversations, attending auctions, and traveling. His unwavering love for Jesus was evident in his daily life, and he touched the hearts of all who knew him, earning him the affectionate nickname "Fatdog."
Wendell is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Karen White Mashburn; son, Jodie Mashburn; daughter and son-in-law, Jena Mashburn Dewberry and Josh Dewberry; and adoring grandchildren, Keelyn, Kamirra, Kaleah, Kayson Anderson, and Layken Dewberry. He is also survived by his sisters, Shirley Craft and Nancy Tidwell.
In addition to his parents, Wendell was preceded in death by his son, Jamie Mashburn; and siblings, James Mashburn, Donald Mashburn, G.W. Mashburn, Wayne Mashburn, Wade Mashburn, Ray Mashburn, and Virginia Norton.
Friends and family are invited to pay their respects at Almon Funeral Home on Tuesday, February 13, 2024, from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, February 14, 2024, at 2 p.m. at the chapel of Almon Funeral Home, officiated by Rev. Ed McGrory.
Pallbearers honoring Wendell's memory will be Marshall Edgy, Roger Young, Daniel Mashburn, Jeremy Milam, Eric Norton, and Mac Lewis.
Wendell will be laid to rest at the New Lebanon Baptist Church Cemetery, now the Community Bible Church., with American Legion Post 143 providing military honors.
