Ruth Amy Sutliff Strausser departed this life for the next on December 12th, 2015 at her home after an extended period of illness. She was born November 5, 1932 to Joseph and Eula Heffelfinger Sutliff on November 5th, 1932 in Indianapolis, IN. In 1950, Ruth was employed by the Armed Forces Security Agency, now known as the National Security Agency in Washington, DC. In 1963 Ruth entered the still little known field of information technology and became one of the first programmers at The University of West Georgia in Carrollton, later becoming a systems analyst with the Georgia Institute of Technology, retiring in 1998 with over 30 years in IT. In 1965, Ruth wed Edward Strausser, her devoted and constant companion until his death in 2010. In 1968, the couple relocated to Carrollton, Georgia, which Ruth called home for the remainder of her life. Ruth was a devoted wife, mother and homemaker. She excelled in tailoring and handwork and sewed her and her daughters clothes. An adventuresome cook, she treated her family to new recipes every week. She always made time each evening to sit on the deck with Ed to exchange stories about their day and read each other interesting or humorous items from the newspaper. Ruth was a dedicated member of her church, First United Methodist Church of Carrollton. She taught Sunday School and very much enjoyed her friends in her class. After she had raised her children, Ruth expanded her community service to serve as President of the Georgia League of Women Voters and Treasurer of the North Georgia Conference of United Methodist Women. She received the Governors Award for Volunteerism. She was also a member of the BPW and the Zoning Commission. Her legacy, however, is her devoted family. She is preceded in death by her loving parents, her husband of 45 years, her son Michael Robert Nixon, her step-daughter Kathyrn Strausser Owen and her son-in-law Dr. Vernon McAnally. She is survived by sister The Reverend Jean Sutliff Young of Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, brother Dr. Thomas (Judy) Sutliff of Cary, Illinois, daughter Dr. Kathleen McAnally of Decatur, Tennessee, step-son Edward Strausser (Carolyn) of Point Reyes Station, California, one daughter-in-law Ann Marie Nixon, four granddaughters: Georgia Nixon (Matt) of Ohio, Susannah Fletcher (Robert) of Ohio, Mickie Defoor (Larry) of Carrollton, and Heather Bulloch (Shane) of Cedartown, Georgia, three grandsons: Scott McAnally of Tennessee, David Corey Owen (Kelley) of Atlanta and Brad Spann (Stefanie) of Dublin, Georgia, eight great-grandchildren, two uncles and five nieces and nephews. A visitation for Ruth will be held at Almon Funeral Home, 548 Newnan St. in Carrollton on Tuesday, December 15th from 5 PM to 7 PM and again on Wednesday, December 16th from 12 noon to 1 PM. A funeral service will be conducted on December 16th at 1 p.m. from the chapel of Almon Funeral Home with Dr. Dean Milford officiating. By her wish, Ruth's worldly remains will be cremated and later interred next to her spouse on a hill overlooking the Monongahela River in Edward's native Charleroi, Pennsylvania.
