Robert Veal, Jr.
Mr. Robert Lynton Veal, Jr., age 81 of Cumming, Georgia passed away Saturday, September 17, 2016.
Mr. Veal was born in Carroll County, Georgia on November 3, 1934, the son of the late Robert L. Veal, Sr. and Katherine Griffin Veal. He was a 1952 graduate of Darlington High School in Rome and was on the baseball team. Mr. Veal attended Washington Lee University from 1952-1953 in Lexington, Virginia where he was a member of the SAE Fraternity. He transferred to West Point in 1953 and graduated with a BS degree in General Engineering in 1957. While at West Point he participated in football, track, lacross, debate, fishing and hunting club.
After graduating from West Point he worked at Douglas Aircraft in Southern California for three months before reporting to the Air Force. He obtained flight training at Bartow Air Force Base in Mobile, Alabama and later served as communication skills instructor at Lackland Air Force Base Officer Candidate School.
He worked as a licensed stock broker while in the Air Force in San Antonio, Texas, where he met his future wife, Kay Francis Wolfe. They were married June 24, 1958 in Nuevo Loredo, Mexico. In 1959, he left the Air Force for the private sector. He came home to Cartersville, Georgia and was plant engineer for Union Carbide, where he was in charge of plant operations. In 1962 the family moved to the Buckhead area of Atlanta and he was employed as executive assistant to the president of Atlanta Gas Light. While working for AGL, he started investing in Real Estate. He got his real estate licenses and formed a private corporation in 1965.
Mr. Veal was very civic minded and became involved with the Atlanta Jaycees, was commander of Post #134 of the American Legion, member of the National Society of Professional Engineers, West Point Alumni Society, Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association, past director of AGREE Realtor Association and partner in Blanchard Advertising.
After leaving AGL, he went full time into real estate investing in the early 1970s. He and his son formed a computer company and he continued his passion of investing in real estate until 2014 at which time his health prohibited him.
He is survived by his loving wife, Kay W. Veal of Cumming, Georgia; children and their spouses, Katherine V. Carrier of Alpharetta, Georgia, Sonja V. (Robert) Sanders of Jefferson, Georgia, Robert L. (Susan) Veal, III of Cumming, Georgia, Suzanne V. (Jay) Gabler of Tampa, Florida; grandchildren, Kevin and Caitlin Carrier, Robert K. Sanders, III, Kyle A. Sanders, Erin Krin (Jonathan) of Tucker, Georgia, Justin Veal, Robert L. Veal, IV, Rachel Veal, Griffin R. Gabler, Katherine E. Gabler, Lindsey M. Gabler and great grandchild, Samantha Kirn.
The family will receive friends in the sanctuary of the Carrollton First United Methodist Church, Saturday, September 24 from 10:30 a.m. until 11:30 a.m.
Funeral service will be Saturday, September 24, 2016 at 11:30 a.m. in the sanctuary of the Carrollton First United Methodist Church with Rev. Ken Stephens and Rev. Larry Patton officiating. Music will be by Jack Barr and Pat Reynolds.
Interment will be in the Carrollton City Cemetery.
