Mildred Gaston Jobe, a beloved daughter, wife, aunt and friend went to be with her Lord and Savior April 14, 2011. Mildred died peacefully in her sleep at Southern Comfort, Bremen GA after complications of liver cancer and vascular disease. Mildred was affectionately known as "Mimi" by friends and family. Several long time friends referred to her as "Wonderful Mildred." Mildred was born January 5, 1921 in Carrollton, Georgia to the late Pearl King Gaston and late James Henry Gaston. She was preceded in death by her husband of 30 years, Harry Victor Jobe and by her brother James Denver Gaston. Mildred received her early education in Carrollton Schools attending College Street Grammar School and graduated valedictorian from Carrollton High School in 1938. She attended West Georgia College two years and graduated from the University of Georgia in 1943, with highest honors with a degree in pre-med. Mildred is remembered by friends and family for her warm hospitality, her diligence, faithfulness, and generosity in all her commitments, her love for her country, love for Israel, and most of all her devotion to Jesus Christ. Her greatest passion was encouraging and mentoring people of all ages in a personal and intimate relationship with Jesus through friendships, women's ministry, Bible studies, and Vacation Bible School. Mildred married Harry Jobe in 1964. They lived on a small picturesque farm in the bluegrass of Frankfort, Kentucky. They raised thoroughbred horses, one of which raced at Church Hill Downs and another at Keeneland. Also, they loved to garden, cook, and opened their home to family, friends, and many "adopted sons and daughters." Harry was a hospital administrator of King's Daughters Hospital in Frankfort. They served the community through many service organizations and served on the board of the Salvation Army. While at the University of Kentucky Medical Center, her diligence in her field was documented in a well known clinical pathology journal. In a routine blood test, Mildred identified a rare bacteria in the blood of a critically ill two year old boy, which saved his life. Mildred was long time member of Living Waters Church, Shelbyville, Kentucky. She loved serving and being a part of this vital church family which was a very important chapter in her life. At age 81, Mildred decided to move to Carrollton to be closer to family. She faithfully encouraged and supported her sister-in-law Corinne Gaston through a long extended illness. Mildred quickly reconnected with lifelong friends, as well as, making new ones. She became a member of Old Camp Methodist Church. She frequently expressed her deep appreciation for the love, kindness, and care she felt from this church family. Mildred asked the pastor on her arrival to Old Camp, "How can I get in the 50 year old class?" He replied, "If you teach the class." Mildred quickly responded, "I would love too!" While we are saddened by our loss, we rejoice over the beautiful Christian legacy Mimi left to all who knew her and celebrate her precious life. Mildred is survived by two nieces and one nephew, Carol Mudd, her husband Tony, of Arlington TX, Wren Heavener, her husband Jerry of Harleysville, PA, Allen Gaston and his wife Stacy of Carrollton, GA. Her nine great nieces and great nephews are John, James and Amanda Mudd, Jennifer and Christopher Heavener, and Kenzie, Sydney, Reed and Rhett Gaston. Mildred and Harry were God parents to Tommy, Clifton, and Catron, children of lifelong friends Susan Cox and the late Bert Cox. We would like to express our deep appreciation to Karen Powell and her staff at Southern Comfort who lovingly cared for Mimi during this last month of her life. The family will receive friends at Almon Funeral Home on Tuesday evening, April 19 from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Funeral service will be Wednesday, April 20 at 11 a.m. at Old Camp United Methodist Church with Pastor Earl Goode officiating. Pallbearers will be Reed Gaston, Chris Heavener, Jerry Heavener, Tony Mudd and Allen Gaston. Interment will be in Old Camp United Methodist Church Cemetery.
