Obituary

Marian Joyce (Joy) Padgett, age 74, of Carrollton, GA, passed away peacefully on September 22, 2016 surrounded by her loving family. She was born February 12, 1942, in Lyons, GA, to the late Thomas Harold Hilliard and Georgia Lee Wilkes Hilliard. She married Thomas C Padgett on June 1, 1963 and he survives. Also surviving are her children Thomas C. Padgett, Jr, and his wife Lannah; Candace Isehower and her husband Wayne, and Christi Bell; one brother Thomas Hilliard, Jr. and his wife Lynna and 2 sons Ben and Clayton; 4 grandsons John and Thomas Padgett, Jack Bell and Evan Wages; 5 granddaughters, Joy Dodson, Lindsay Padgett, Madison Wages, and Taylor and Sarah Bell; and six great-grandchildren. Joy and Tom spent the first twenty years of their lives together living at numerous Air Force Bases around the United States. They settled in Carrollton in 1982 and they have been residents ever since. After graduating from Glennville High School, she attended Georgia Southern University where she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Education. She later went on to earn her Masters Degree in Education from Troy State University at Montgomery, AL. Her career included teaching English at Prattville Junior High School and Carrollton High School. She was also an adjunct instructor of English, and a tutor to the football players at the University of West Georgia . Among her favorite hobbies were reading, writing and painting. She was very proud of the wall mural that she assisted in painting which is still admired by the residents at Carrollton Manor. Joy also was extremely proud of all of her grandchildren and enjoyed spending time with each of them. Some of her most favorite memories were time spent with family and friends at Lake Martin, Alabama. The memorial service will be conducted Sunday, September 25 at 3:00 pm in the Sanctuary of Carrollton First United Methodist Church, 206 Newnan Street, Carrollton, Ga., with Reverends Larry Patton and Ken Stephens officiating. The family will receive friends in the area outside of the Covenant classroom (2nd floor) beginning at 2:00 pm.
