Dr. Jeanette Comer Bernhardt, age 83, of Carrollton, Georgia, passed away on Wednesday, October 21, 2026.
Jeanette was born on March 16, 1943, in Weaver, Alabama, to the late E.G. Comer and Maryzette Self Comer. A dedicated educator and leader in the nursing profession, she earned her undergraduate degree from Carraway Methodist Hospital School of Nursing, her Masters from the University of Alabama at Birmingham and a doctorate from the University of Texas at Austin. She served as Chair and Dean of the School of Nursing at West Georgia College from 1978 until 1999, where she made a lasting impact on nursing education and the many students and colleagues whose lives she touched. Jeanette devoted much of her professional life to advancing the nursing profession and supporting the next generation of nurses as she was instrumental in establishing the Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree at UWG. Her service extended to her being appointed to the Georgia Board of Nursing and the National League for Nursing, where she remained connected to the academic and professional communities she so greatly valued.
Jeanette was a faithful member of St. Margaret's Episcopal Church in Carrollton, where she participated in the choir and served with the Altar Guild. Her commitment to her church, her profession, and her community reflected a life of service, dedication, and purpose.
One of Jeanette’s greatest loves was quilting. It was a passion, not just a hobby. She was an active member of the West Georgia Quilters Guild, even serving a term as President.
She is survived by her loving husband, Fred Bernhardt; son and daughter-in-law, Kevin and Deborah Bernhardt of Carrollton; grandchildren, Jackson and Sheri Bernhardt, Julia Bernhardt, Richard Bernhardt; great-grandchild, Fox Bernhardt, all of Carrollton; nephew, Tony Kemp of Anniston, AL; nieces, Jenene Moses of Oxford, AL, Susan Holden of Jacksonville, AL; and sister-in-law, Virginia Vickery of Decatur, AL.
In addition to her parents, Jeanette was preceded in death by her sister, Vivian Kemp.
A memorial service will be held on Monday, November 2, 2026, at 2:00 PM at St. Margaret's Episcopal Church in Carrollton. A reception will follow in the Parish Hall.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Dr Jeanette C. Bernhardt Merit Scholarship fund at the University of West Georgia, 1601 Maple Street, Carrollton, GA 30118. This is a link to the West Georgia Foundation website https://www.westga.edu/give/index.php
