Janice H. Dixon passed quietly from this life on September 30, 2024. Jan, as she was known to her family and friends, was born in Manchester GA on February 2, 1936, the daughter of James E. Haynes, Sr., and Annice Brown Haynes. In addition to her parents, Jan was predeceased by a brother and sister-in-law James E Haynes, Jr., and June Lawhorn Haynes.

Jan is survived by her high school sweetheart and husband of sixty-seven years George Matthew Dixon, Jr., daughter Nan Dixon Kinser of Ft. Myers, FL, daughter and son-in-law Clair and Norman Currey of Lafayette, IN, son and daughter-in-law Matt and Nora Dixon of Merrimack, NH, and son and daughter-in-law Mark and Becky Dixon of Carrollton. She is also survived by ten grandchildren and their spouses: Allison and Joseph Arstill, Leigh Ann Collins, Christa and Marilisa Porter, David Currey, Andrew Currey, Anna Dixon, Alexander and Leigh Dixon, Joshua and Sammantha Dixon, Heather and Will Carden, and Aleigha and Thomas Bush, and fifteen great-grandchildren. In addition, Jan is survived by a sister and brother-in-law Harriette and Wayne Ostean of Hoover AL, brother and sister-in-law John and Cathy Haynes of Leesburg, GA, brother Thomas Haynes of Gray, GA, sister and brother-in-law Ann and Jerry Osteen of Gainesville, FL, and numerous nieces and nephews. Jan was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and sister.

Jan received a BS in Education with Honors degree from West Georgia College, now the University of West Georgia. She went on to earn two graduate degrees from the same institution. While attending the West Georgia College, Jan was elected to Phi Kappa Phi Academic Honor Society.

Jan taught kindergarten for twenty-seven years in the Carrollton City School Systems and was a member of the Carrollton Association of Educators. She was also a member of the Georgia Association of Educators and the West Georgia Chapter of Phi Delta Kappa International professional education fraternity.

Jan was also active in her community. She was a Girl Scout leader, an active member of the Pilot Club of Carrollton, where she served two years as president. She conducted bicycle safety workshops sponsored by the Pilot Club in area schools. She worked the polls with the Carroll County Board of Elections and was a volunteer for the Friends of Neva Lomason Library. To all who knew her, Jan was one of the kindest and most generous people they had known.

One of her most treasured activities was making sugar panorama eggs at Easter for family and friends, many of whom still display these eggs every Easter.

Jan enjoyed traveling with George. They enjoyed coastal cruising on their sailboat, trips to Europe, and international cruises. She and George also enjoyed attending performances by the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, the Atlanta Opera, and the Carrollton Center for the Arts. Jan was a supporter of the arts, education, and the Neva Lomason Library.

The family expresses their appreciation for the loving care given Jan by Lisa Marchman, who became one of her cherished companions. The family also thanks the attentive staff of Caregivers of West Georgia and everyone with Sacred Journey Hospice.

A Memorial Service to celebrate her life will be held in the Chapel at Almon Funeral Home on Sunday, October 6, 2024 at 3:00 pm. The Reverend Ken Stephens will officiate; Tony Childers will provide service music.

The Family will receive friends at Almon Funeral Home from 1:00 pm until 3:00 pm on Sunday.

Interment will be at Bonaventure Cemetery in Savannah.
