Mr. James Russell Hughes, Sr., of Carrollton, passed away on Saturday, July 13, 2024, at the age of 92. Russell was born on March 26, 1932, and was a lifelong Carrollton resident. A loving husband, father and grandfather, he is survived by his wife of 68 years, Kathryn McDowell Hughes; son, James Russell Hughes, Jr. (Tammy); and grandsons, James Russell Hughes III (Abbey) and Jonathan Faulkner Hughes, as well as extended family and friends who will miss him dearly. He was a role model of integrity and kindness to everyone.
Russell was preceded in death by his parents, Adams Lee Hughes and Myrtle Lou Jackson Hughes; and his brother, R.B. Hughes.
Russell spent his career at Carrollton Federal Savings and Loan Association where he retired as Vice President of the Mortgage Loan Department. He was a faithful member and served as a Deacon and Treasurer at Carrollton First Baptist Church. In addition, he served as Secretary of the Carrollton Baptist Association for 13 years.
Russell was a long-time member and President of the Carrollton Kiwanis Club, and served as President of the Carrollton High School Band Booster Club. He was a veteran of the US Army and also a board member at Sunset Hills Country Club. He had many hobbies during his life, including tennis, golf, coaching American Legion baseball, NCAA track and field officiating and running. After retirement he ran multiple times in the Blue Angel Half-Marathon, the Savannah Bridge Run, and many 10k races around Georgia. He also held a private pilot license and flew a Cessna Skyhawk for several years.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday, July 17, 2024 from 5 PM to 7 PM at Almon Funeral Home. Funeral service will be held on Thursday, July 18, 2024 at 10 AM at Carrollton First Baptist with Dr. David Hughes officiating.
Interment will follow at Concord Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery, 1147 Highway 113, Carrollton, Georgia with Randy Foster, Michael Foster, Mark Foster, Craig Davis, Mike Barrett, James Hughes III, Jonathan Hughes and Joe Bell serving as pallbearers.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to First Baptist Church, General Fund,
102 Dixie Street, Carrollton, Georgia.
