Obituary

Mrs. Irene Swanson, age 94, of 2455 Oak Grove Church Road, Carrollton, Georgia, formerly of Birmingham, Alabama, died Wednesday, February 11, 2009. Mrs. Swanson was born in Cullman County, Alabama on June 11, 1914, the daughter of the late Lovette Hancock and Froni Woodley Hancock She was a homemaker and a member of Oak Grove Baptist Church of Carrollton. Survivors include her brother John Alton (Buster) Hancock of Cullman, Alabama; sister Lila Mae Trimble of Brewton, Alabama; son and daughter-in-law Gerald P. and Charlotte Crumly Culwell of Carrollton; daughter-in-law Beverly Craft Culwell of Birmingham; granddaughter Rachelle Culwell Ross and spouse Kevin Ross of Cairo, Georgia; grandson Johnny Culwell and spouse Kimberly Ingle-Culwell of Carrollton; grandson, David Culwell of Birmingham; granddaughter Lisa Culwell Higgins and spouse Barry Higgins of Birmingham; great-grandchildren Annie Elizabeth Ross, Carter Owen Culwell, Thomas Patrick Culwell, Jennifer Lauran Vaughn, and Amy Nichole Vaughn. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her late husbands Carl Culwell and Berton Swanson; son Marlin D. Culwell; grandson Michael Steven Culwell; great grandson Markus Culwell; brothers Arthur Jasper Hancock, Jesse Clyde Hancock, Lovette Curtis Hancock, Elijah Mosely (Doc) Hancock; sisters Euna Chatham, Mamie and Eula Hancock; and granddaughter Rebecca Culwell. Funeral service will be held Saturday, February 14 at 1:30 p.m. at Oak Grove Baptist Church. The family will receive friends at the church Saturday beginning at 12:30 p.m. Rev. Mike Owenby and Dr. Howard Cobble will officiate and the music will be furnished by Linda Haag and Will Whittaker. Pallbearers will be Johnny Culwell, Kevin Ross, Mac Orange, Randy Bell, Bob Mayer, and Lewis North. The family will receive friends at Almon Funeral Home on Friday from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. Interment will be in the church cemetery.
