Lt. Colonel Hubert "Hugh" Mitchell, Retired United States Marine Corp, age 74, of Carrollton, Georgia died Tuesday, August 21, 2012. Lt. Col Mitchell was born in Conehatta, Mississippi on May 10, 1938, the youngest of four children of Lillian Irene Bryant Mitchell and Albert Hopkins Mitchell. He was preceded in death by his parents and sisters, Hazel Michelle Dick and Helen Partridge. On December 18, 1959, in Auburn, Alabama, he was in the last graduating class of Alabama Polytechnic Institute. Two weeks later, on January 1, 1960, the school's name was changed to Auburn University. Working in Atlanta for International Business Machines, his approaching military draft led to joining the U. S. Marine Corps. During his 25 years as a Naval Aviator he flew A-4 Skyhawk attack aircraft, F-4 Phantom fighters, and Cobra attack helicopters. Assignments included two combat tours in Vietnam, three tours as a squadron commander, and posting as the U.S. Naval Attache, Kingston, Jamaica. He was a graduate of the Naval War College. Lt. Colonel Mitchell's many military awards include the Meritorious Service Medal, six Air Medals, the Combat Action Ribbon, and the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry. After retiring from the Marine Corps, he served, at various times as chairman of the boards of the Georgia Department of Veterans Affairs, Towns County Chamber of Commerce, Hiawassee River Watershed Coalition, and Friends of McIntosh Reserve. He also volunteered with many different organizations in Carrollton. He was a member of the Aubrey Gilbert Detachment 1312 and St. Margaret's Episcopal Church. He is survived by his wife, Carol Cox Mitchell; son and daughter-in-law, Michael Black Mitchell and Lisa C. Mitchell of Oxford, Mississippi; brother, Howard Mitchell of Los Angeles, California; grandchildren, Lillian Grace Camille Mitchell, Sylvia Caroline Mitchell, Eliza Jolynn Mitchell, Zachary Samuel Miller, Jeremy Wyatt Miller. The family will receive friends at Almon Funeral Home on Thursday evening from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Funeral service will be Friday, August 24, 2012 at 10 a.m. at St. Margaret's Episcopal Church with the Very Reverend Hazel S. Glover officiating. Interment and full military honors will be conducted Friday, August 24, 2012 at 2:30 p.m. at Georgia Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Milledgeville, Georgia.
