Hildegard Brendel
Wolverton
Oct 8, 1935 — Apr 30, 2025
Hildegard Brendel Wolverton, age 89, of Carrollton, Georgia, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on Wednesday, April 30, 2025. She was born October 8, 1935, in Barberton, Ohio, to the late Alois Brendel and Margaret Muller Brendel, who had immigrated from Germany, making Hildegard a proud first-generation American.
Raised in a strong Catholic faith, Hildegard attended Catholic School from first through twelfth grade, graduating from St. Vincent High School. She later enjoyed a fulfilling career as a secretary at Auburn University, from which she retired. While working at Auburn she enrolled in school and was honored with membership in Alpha Lambda Delta National Honor Society.
Alongside her beloved late husband, Clyde Wolverton, a professor at Auburn University, Hildegard played a significant role in supporting the German study abroad internship program that connected Auburn with the University of Mannheim in Germany. Their shared love of culture and education opened doors for countless students.
A dedicated professional, Hildegard was an active member of the American Business Women's Association (ABWA), serving as both President and Vice President, and was named ABWA Woman of the Year in 1981. She was also an avid traveler who cherished visiting Europe, Thailand, and cruising through the Caribbean.
Above all, Hildegard was a devoted mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Margaret Wolverton Chastain and MAJ Philip W. Chastain, USA, Ret.; her grandchildren, Victoria Chastain Hamilton and Alexandra Chastain Lowery and husband, SSG Keegan Lowery, USA; her great-grandchildren, Cameron Hamilton and Kaiden Hamilton; her sister, Margaret B. O'Brien; sister-in-law, Gloria Wolverton Woodford; and several beloved nieces and nephews. The family also treasures Carl Leon Ross, who became a close and cherished part of the Wolverton family following the passing of their son, Karl.
In addition to her parents, Hildegard was preceded in death by her son, Karl Michael Wolverton; her grandson, David Michael Rogers; and her great-granddaughter, Ava Renee Hamilton.
The family will receive friends at Almon Funeral Home on Monday, May 5, 2025 from 5PM-7PM.
A graveside and interment service will be held at Memorial Park Cemetery in Auburn, Alabama on Tuesday, May 6, 2025 at 2PM CST.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, PO Box 1685, Atlanta, GA 30303.
Hildegard's faith, strength, and love for her family leave a lasting legacy. She will be deeply missed.
