Elder H. Hearn, Jr. of Carrollton, Georgia, passed away on November 6, 2008, at his residence. Mr. Hearn was born in Carroll County, Georgia, on October 19, 1923, to the late E.H. and Alva Smith Hearn. He graduated from Bowdon High School in 1941, West Georgia Junior College in 1943 and the L.S.U. Bank School of the South in 1961. He joined the U.S. Navy Air Force in 1943 and was assigned to the Atlantic Fleet, Headquarters Squadron 5-1 based primarily in Key West, Florida. He was honorably discharged in May, 1946, with the rank of L.T. (jg). He married Louise Burnham Hearn of Carroll County, Georgia, on December 25, 1944. They have been married for 63 years and have lived in Carrollton since returning from naval duty. E.H. Hearn, Jr. began a long and distinguished banking career with the newly organized West Georgia National Bank on opening day, Sept. 1, 1946. He began work as a teller-bookkeeper and worked in all departments of the bank as one of a staff of five people. He became a member of the Board of Directors and Executive Vice-President in 1958. He was named President of the bank in 1965 and served in that position until he retired in 1991. He served as a Director Emeritus until 1997. He loved and enjoyed the banking business. He witnessed tremendous growth and innovation in the bank and in the community of Carrollton as well. During his tenure the bank moved from their original location on Adamson Square into two newly constructed buildings and opened four branch banks. He was an active member of the Georgia Bankers Association serving on various committees. He was recognized in 1996 by the Georgia Bankers Association and Community Bankers Association of Georgia for 50 years of service to banking. Mr. Hearn has a long history of community and civic involvement in Carrollton. He was a member of the Carrollton Rotary Club for over 40 years, serving as President in 1963-64. He was named a Paul Harris Fellow. He was a past member of the Carroll County Chamber of Commerce, the Carrollton Housing Authority and the Carrollton Planning Commission. He is a past trustee of the West Georgia College Foundation and has been active in A-Day fundraising for many years. He has been involved in fund-raising for many local charitable organizations including the March of Dimes, Heart Fund, Red Cross and the Magnolia Ball for Tanner Medical Foundation. He was a member of the Carrollton First United Methodist Church and the Adult Fellowship Sunday School Class. He served the church on the Administrative Council, Finance Committee and as Chairman of the Pastor-Parish committee. E. H. Hearn had a great capacity to enjoy life. He had many hobbies including gardening, boating and travel. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather and enjoyed spending time with his family especially on trips to the beaches of Florida and Georgia with his children and grandchildren. He and Louise visited 46 states and many foreign countries. In addition to his parents, Mr. Hearn was preceded in death by his sister, Frances Hearn Reaves. Survivors include his wife, Louise Hearn; his daughters, Sandra Hearn Blackwell and her husband, Dr. James C. Blackwell of Dalton, Georgia, and Judy Hearn Green and her husband, William Robert Green of Athens, Georgia. Grandchildren are Dr. J. Matthew Blackwell and his wife Sarah, of Charlotte, N.C., Betsy Blackwell of Washington, D.C., Christopher Green and Benjamin Green of Athens, Georgia, and great-grandson, Andrew Collier Blackwell of Charlotte, N.C. Additional survivors include a sister, Myrl Hearn Hainlin of College Park, Georgia; two nieces; a sister-in-law, Rudene Burnham Hollingsworth of Carrollton and two devoted caregivers, Zella Echols and Terri Bodden. Funeral services will be on Sunday, November 9, at 3:00 P.M. at the First United Methodist Church of Carrollton with Rev. Eddie Herring, Dr. Bill Holt and Dr. Dean Milford officiating. Bob Brown, Joe Abernathy, Leighton Alston, Michael C. Low, Scott McDonald, Phil Stamps and Richard Duncan will serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Board of WGNB Corp. and First National Bank of Georgia. Interment will follow at Carroll Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends at Almon Funeral Home on Saturday, November 8, from 5:00-7:00 P.M.
