Edward (Red) Whitsett Edward Ernest Whitsett, 90,of Villa Rica, died Friday, June 10, 2011. Born in Herrin, Illinois, Mr. Whitsett served in the US Navy from 1940-46, attaining the rank of Chief Petty Officer. He earned Bachelor's and Master's degrees at Auburn University, where as a Master's student he coached the freshman football team on which Vince Dooley played. After teaching and coaching at Grady High School in Atlanta for 12 years, he became Coordinator of Boys High School Physical Education for the Atlanta City Schools. Mr. Whitsett loved baseball. In 1962, while teaching, he became a part-time scout for the Baltimore Orioles. He was the founding President of the Atlanta Dugout Club and, in 1996 was in the first class of inductees into the Georgia Dugout Club Hall of Fame. After retiring from the Atlanta schools, he became a full-time baseball scout, initially for the California Angels, then Kansas City Royals (including their 1984 World Series win). In the off-season, he evaluated basketball officials for the Southeastern Conference. Finally, he was a full time scout for the Milwaukee Brewers until after his 79th birthday. Mr. Whitsett was a past-President of the Georgia Association of Health, Physical Education and Recreation, as well as the Carroll County AARP. He was a member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in Carrollton. He is survived by his daughters Sylvia Simmons of Oakwood, GA, Marsha Faulk of Statesboro, Rosalyn Smith of Dublin, GA, and son Michael Smith of Saint Simons Island; eight grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. The family will receive friends at Almon Funeral Home, Monday, June 13 from 11 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. Funeral mass will be at 1 p.m. Monday, June 13 at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church. Burial will be in the church cemetery with the American Legion Post #143 folding and presenting the U.S. Flag.
