Edna Murphy Southern, a Christian, devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and cherished friend, peacefully passed away May 24, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of love, generosity, and lifelong faith. She was born in Pickens County Georgia to Overton Love Murphy and Laura Ann Hyde. Edna dedicated over 50 years of her life to education, touching countless lives as a passionate and inspiring teacher. She graduated from Rhinehart College with an associate's degree, North Georgia College with her bachelor's degree and West Georgia College with her master's degree.
As a faithful member of First Baptist Church, her enduring love for the Lord was evident in every aspect of her life. She was known for her generosity, hosting memorable parties and sharing her creative spirit with all who knew her including her special friends, Kitty Wright (deceased) and J. Douglas Wright. Edna resided at the Stewart House in her final years, surrounded by caretakers she loved so dearly.
She shared a remarkable journey with her beloved husband, Lloyd J. F. Southern. They were married 62 years until his passing on June 20, 2023. Together they built a life grounded in love, family, and faith. Edna was also a proud mother to Mark Lloyd Southern and Laura Ann Southern Miller (John) and grandmother to Madelyn Mann Miller (Doug Templeton) and Winston Lloyd Miller, who brought light into her later years.
Edna also leaves behind her three precious sisters and brothers in-law, Edith Murphy Hagen (Donahue), Shirley Murphy Burgess (Charles), and Eva Murphy Hicks (Jim). Her love extended to her nieces and nephews-Kim, Karen, Kenda, Kevin, Rowena, Sharon, Larry, Jerry, June and Dinah-who felt the warmth and generosity of her spirit.
Visitation with the family will be at Almon Funeral Home on Wednesday, May 28, 2025 from 5 pm to 7 pm.
Funeral service will be Thursday, May 29, 2025 at 11 am at the First Baptist Church with Dr. David Hughes officiating. The family will receive friends at the church from 10am until funeral hour.
Interment will follow the service in Sunrise Memorial Gardens in Jasper, Georgia at 3 pm with Rev. Murphy Hagen officiating.
Her legacy of compassion, beauty, and faith will forever be remembered.
