Obituary

Mrs. Dott Ingram Cofer, age 85, of Carrollton, Georgia passed away Tuesday, April 14, 2015. Mrs. Cofer was born in Asheville, NC on July 9, 1929, the daughter of the late Girdwood Orison Ingram and Clare Michael Ingram. Dott was a long time patron and participant of Carroll County Community Theatre for over thirty-five years, beginning in 1980 with her first CCCT role as Sister Felicitas in "Seven Nuns at Las Vegas." Her favorite role, though, was Clairee in the 1991 production of "Steel Magnolias." Other acting credits include "Picnic" (1981), Carousel" (1983), "No Sex Please, We're British" (1984), "Harvey" (1985), "Annie Get Your Gun" (1986), "Arsenic and Old Lace" (1987), "The Foreigner" (1989), "Play On!" (1990), "Music Man" (1991), "Mame" (1992), "Cliffhanger," (1994) "The Boyfriend" (2000), "Damn Yankees"(2004), "Fiddler on the Roof"(2005), "Murder in the Magnolias" (2006), "Radio TBS" (2007) and "A Christmas Story"(2013). Dott checked out a script for every show to see if there was a role for her to tackle and especially loved characters that allowed her to tap into her comedic talents. When she was not treading the boards on stage, she could be found in the audience (usually in her favorite seat H-25 at the Carrollton Cultural Arts Center) cheering on her fellow thespians and mentoring young actors and encouraging their development. Patrons who sit in H-25 will see that it has been engraved in her honor. Dott was the widow of influential Southwire engineer Pete Cofer, and throughout his career at Southwire, she remained a rock of support for him as he worked to initiate some of Southwire's historical breakthroughs, such as the technology that ultimately became the company's continuous casting process, and take on many other innovative challenges within Southwire. While supporting Pete and raising their four daughters, she was the consummate volunteer. She fed and transported the girls, their friends and teammates on hundreds of occasions; attended numerous softball and basketball games, track meets, and band concerts; and chaperoned Carrollton High School band trips for more than a dozen years. Dott was instrumental in the creation of the Carrollton Bluefins Swim Team, serving as a founding board member, assisted in the hiring of their first coach, and helped run numerous swim meets as her daughters swam as a part of the swim team. During these year she also played tennis and bridge, and acted in plays at West Georgia College, under the direction of Wallace Buice. During the 1960's and 70's she was in "Auntie Mame", "Look Homeward, Angel", and "The Flowering Peach", and received the Best Actress Award in 1979. Throughout her life Dott was blessed with countless longtime friendships, especially with those she played bridge with three times a week, her Birthday Club and Bosom Buddies friends, the Faith Explorers Sunday School Class at Carrollton First United Methodist Church, and many other very special friends. She's made baby blankets for generations of children, as well as for her 9 grandchildren and her 2 great grandchildren from her 4 "beautiful daughters". Dott also loved traveling to her favorite destination spots, The Cayman Islands and the North Carolina Mountains. Recently she passed along her love of theater by generously endowing the Cofer Theater Program at the North Carolina college of her youth, Brevard College, Survivors include her 4 daughters - Amy Cofer (Tom van Zanten) of Carrollton, GA and Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands; Jean Cofer of Peachtree City, GA; Kay Horton (Mike Horton) of Carrollton, GA; and Ann Volle (Paul Volle) of Mableton, GA; 9 grandchildren - Daniel Quinn van Zanten and Asher Lee van Zanten of Carrollton, GA and Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands; Brooke Mariah Harwell (Paul Noble) of Lawrenceville, GA; Lindsey Kate Horton Humphrey (Collin Humphrey) of Yuba City, CA; Sarah Ann Horton of Atlanta, GA; Mariah Cofer Horton and Michael Cofer Horton of Carrollton, GA; Emma Caroline Volle and Noelle Kay Liudan Volle of Mableton, GA; 2 great grandchildren - Porter Watts Nelson and Hank Harwell Noble of Lawrenceville, GA; and many valued and loving friends in Carrollton, Newnan, and North Carolina.
