Dorothy A. McNabb of Carrollton, Georgia died September 3, 2010 at the age of 87. She was born in Erwin, Tennessee on June 19, 1923. Dorothy graduated from Unicoi County High School in 1941 where she was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 1999. She received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Health and Physical Education from Carson Newman College in 1944 and a Master of Arts from George Peabody College in 1953. She began a lifelong career of teaching in 1945 where she served as Assistant Director of Health and Recreation at the YWCA in Knoxville, Tennessee. She especially loved teaching children and adults swimming and water sports. She worked as a director of water front programs at numerous summer camps from 1948 to 1964. In 1953, " Miss Mac" was hired as an Associate Professor of Physical Education at West Georgia College in Carrollton. She was best known for her restructuring of the college intramural program, which led to the development of the women's intercollegiate athletic program and the beginning of her tenure as West Georgia's first basketball, volleyball and tennis coach. She also was director of the West Georgia College Day Camp which was later named for her. She retired from her duties in 1988. "Miss Mac" received many honors for her accomplishments throughout her career. She was named Volleyball Coach of the Year for three consecutive years in Southern Women's Athletic Conference. Her 1976 Basketball team was winner in the National Tournament. She was inducted in the Georgia Hall of Fame in 1988 and was honored by Secretary of State as an outstanding Georgia Citizen in 1996. After her retirement in 1988 she devoted herself to serving in many leadership roles at the First Baptist Church of Carrollton. She became the first female deacon in the church's history and served many years as Director of Women's Missionary Union. Miss McNabb is survived by her sisters; Linda Cavness of Piney Flats, Tennessee, Terry Arthur of Athens, and six nieces and nephews. Memorial service will be held at First Baptist Church in Carrollton on Saturday, September 11 at 1 o'clock with Dr. Steve Davis officiating. The family will receive friends at the church in Burns Hall following the memorial service.
