Conrad Leon "Coach Whit" Whitaker Sr. age 90, of Carrollton, Georgia passed away on Saturday, December 30, 2023. He was born on March 15,1933 in Rockmart, Georgia the son of the late Roy Leon Whitaker and Lena Brown Whitaker.

He grew up in Rockmart and after high school he went into the U.S. Navy and proudly served his country. In 1958 he came to West Georgia College to pursue his college education and play football. He met Janie Palmer; the love of his life and they were married in 1959. After Reverend L.D. Palmer, Janie's father, witnessed to Leon and shared his faith, Leon accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior at age 26. The rest of his life he faithfully served the Lord. He was an ordained deacon, Sunday school teacher to high school boys and served in many positions of leadership in the church.

He was a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church for the past 23 years and was a member of the Love-In-Action Sunday School Class taught by Mary Lou Grimmett. Leon spent his whole career in education loving, teaching, coaching, and helping his students. He began his career at Temple High school. Next, he went to Carrollton Middle School. Teaching those guys was a great experience and got his career off on a fun and exciting path. Later he decided to return to Rockmart High School where he taught and coached. He then moved to Cedartown High School where he was a vocational counselor and DCT coordinator. He ended his career at Northwest High School in Whitfield County as Vocational Administrator.

Leon was a loving and devoted husband and father. Family held a special place in his heart and he cherished the moments he spent with them. When Lori shot all those baskets, he was her biggest cheerleader. Equally excited was he when Lee caught a pass or hit a home run.

After retiring in 1991 he enjoyed traveling, playing golf, watching Falcons, Braves and PGA Tour golf. He returned to Carrollton 23 years ago where he and Janie reunited with old friends and made many new ones.

He leaves Janie, his loving wife of 64 years and Conrad Leon Whitaker, Jr., his son and Lori Marie Whitaker, his daughter, to cherish those memories. Besides his parents he was preceded in death by his loving sister Frances Hulsey.

A celebration of life service will be held on Thursday, January 4, 2024 at 2 pm from the chapel of Almon Funeral Home with Rev. Mary Lou Grimmett and Dr. Stephen Allen officiating. Eulogy will be provided by Mr. Steve Busby. The family will receive friends at Almon Funeral Home from 1 pm until the service hour.

Interment will be at Carroll Memory Gardens.

Pallbearers will be Jim Collins, Jamie Shirey, Jimmy Tuggle, Richard Dixon, Jack Whitman and Mickey Moon. Honorary pallbearers will be Love in Action Sunday School Class & Mack Skinner.

Flowers are welcome but those who desire may make memorial contributions in Leon's name to Tabernacle Baptist Church, 150 Tabernacle Drive, Carrollton, Georgia 30117.
