Catherine Barr Maier, age 97 of Carrollton Georgia, beloved wife of Louis G. Maier Jr for 73 years, died Tuesday December 19, 2023.
Catherine, daughter of Josephine Chappell Barr and Thomas Lester Barr, was born on January 13, 1926, in Anniston, Alabama. She graduated from Anniston High School where she was a member of the Glee Club and volunteered as a Junior Hostess at the Anniston USO club. From there she went on to attend the University of Montevallo and received a Bachelor of Music degree in 1948. After graduation Catherine was hired as a music teacher in the Anniston Public School System and was a member of the First Christian Church choir. She and her husband Louis were married on April 28, 1950, in Anniston, Alabama and then moved to Bremen, Georgia.
Over the years Catherine was a member of the Bremen Methodist Church in Bremen, Georgia, Oak Grove Methodist Church in Atlanta, Georgia, Gastonia United Methodist Church in Gastonia North Carolina and Carrollton First United Methodist Church in Carrollton, Georgia where she was very active in all the church choirs. She and Louis settled in Carrollton in 1977 and she joined the Carrollton Lit-Mu Club and the Carrollton Spade & Trowel Garden Club. Throughout the years she enjoyed duplicate bridge, traveling, and spending time at the lake with her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.
Catherine is survived by her husband, Louis G. Maier Jr., three sons and daughters-in-law, Louis George Maier III and his wife Deborah, Thomas Lester Maier and his wife Judy, Christopher Allen Maier and his wife Nina, three granddaughters and a grandson-in-law, Lianna Maier Slaughter and her husband Michael, Elizabeth Anne Maier, Chelsea Rae Maier, two grandsons and two granddaughters-in-law, Brian Scott Maier and his wife Kaia, Zachary Alexander Maier and his wife Yuli, two great granddaughters, Cecelia Jo Slaughter, Maeve Aveline Maier and two great grandsons, Gabriel Christopher Slaughter and Rowan Louis Maier.
A Celebration of Life gathering is planned for Friday March 8, 2024, at 3pm at the chapel of Almon Funeral Home in Carrollton, Georgia with Rev. Larry Patton officiating. The family will receive friends in the chapel from 2pm until the service hour.
