Calvin Weems Boyd, age 96, of 530 Northside Drive, Carrollton, Georgia died Sunday, May 5, 2013 at his home at Horizon Bay. He was born in Carroll County on May 30, 1916, the son of the late Charles Sumner Boyd and Florence Martin Boyd. He was preceded in death by his wife, Bernice Ballentine Boyd, brother Millican Boyd and step-sister Dorothy Byers. He graduated from Carrollton High School in 1935, attended West Georgia College for two years and graduated from what is now Georgia State University, Atlanta, where he was a member of the Delta Sigma Pi business fraternity. He was employed by Sears, Roebuck and Company for 39 years in Atlanta, Gadsden, Alabama and Greensboro, North Carolina as an accountant, auditor and controller. During World War II he served in the U.S. Navy in the Pacific aboard the USS Montague (AKA-98) which received a Battle Star for action at Okinawa. Before returning home he had occupational duty in China and Korea. He served in the U.S. Navy Reserve over 22 years, retiring as a Lt. Commander. Survivors include son and daughter-in-law, Bob and Sandy Boyd, Athens, GA, grandson and wife Allan and LeeAnn Boyd, Greensboro, NC, grandson and wife Morris and Jennifer Boyd, Gainesville, GA, granddaughter, Samantha Boyd Nichols, Sautee, GA, 6 great-grandchildren, nieces Pat Albright, Sue McCarthy and Barb Moore and nephew, David Moore. He was a member of the Carrollton First United Methodist Church and Adult Friendship Sunday School Class. Graveside services and interment will be conducted at Carroll Memory Gardens on Wednesday, May 8 at 11 a.m. with Rev Wayne Webb officiating and American Legion Post #143 will provide military honors.
