Betty Catherine Boone Buice of Carrollton, Georgia passed away peacefully on the evening of Monday, July 27, 2020 at the home of her daughter Kelly Buice Harris and her son-in-law Michael Harris, surrounded by her children, grandchildren, and other loved ones. The daughter of Silas Turner Boone and Bettie Owen Boone of Fayetteville, North Carolina, Betty first attended Bob Jones College where as a freshman, on her first day of college, she met her future husband, Michael Wallace Buice. While still in college, Betty (as pianist) and Wallace (as soloist and comedian) began to perform together at churches, civic clubs, employee parties, corporate events, and most any social gatherings where entertainment was needed, "second careers" that kept both of them busy for the next fifty (50) years. Betty and Wallace first taught together at Massey Hill High School in Fayetteville, North Carolina, and from there moved to Carrollton in 1959, where Wallace taught Speech and Drama at West Georgia College, while Betty (after learning to drive from a WGC Speech and Drama student) helped feed indigent Carroll County families as a caseworker at what was then known as the Welfare Department. Betty soon resumed her life-long career as an educator, teaching English and the Glee Club at Villa Rica High School and later Special Education (in which she earned both her Masters and Specialist Degrees at WGC) at Carrollton Junior High School. When not teaching school full-time, or attending WGC part-time, or driving Wallace (who never learned to drive) to their shows across the South, Betty was sewing the costumes, creating the posters and programs, designing the sets, and playing the piano for Wallace's three yearly play productions at WGC. In her spare time, she played the piano at most services of the First United Methodist Church of Carrollton for many years, and she opened her home to the student casts and crews with her famous "spaghetti suppers." In "retirement," Betty loved "Red Bird Church Mission Trips" and traveling with Wallace to Hawaii, to the Holy Land, and to parts unknown. Her children, Roi Buice Bugg (along with her husband Bob) of Griffin Georgia; Kevin Boone Buice (along with his partner Fae Kelley) of Carrollton; and Kelly Buice Harris (along with her husband Michael) of Carrollton, have no idea how she found the time to be the best mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother that any of them can imagine. But she did. Betty (a/k/a "Meemaw") is survived by her three (3) children (Roi Bugg, Kevin Buice, and Kelly Harris); eight (8) grandchildren (Jason Grubbs, Justin Grubbs, and Kent Bugg, a/k/a "Roi's Boys"); Brooke Buice Ivey, Taylor Buice, Erin Echols, and Ellen Vandever (Kevin and Anita's children); and Brandon Harris (Kelly and Michael's son); and eleven (11) great-grandchildren: Macy, Emma, Abby, and Jack (Jason and Cathy Grubbs); Isabella and Olivia (Justin Grubbs); her namesake Elizabeth Joan "Betty" Ivey (Brooke and Jay Ivey); Jackson, Cooper, and Cameron (Erin and Neal Echols); and Flynn (Ellen and Zack Vandever). The author has it on good authority that Betty has now made it to Heaven where she is seeing her father, S.T. Boone, for the first time in ninety (90) years, not to mention reuniting with her mother Bettie ("Gaga" ) and with the spiritual and romantic love of her life, Wallace, for whom she will no doubt play the piano tonight. So God is indeed good, and Betty's family is thankful for her life well-lived, and lived in abundance. There will be a private family graveside service held at Carroll Memory Gardens.
