Elizabeth Almeda Smith, our beloved mother, grandmother, and great grandmother, passed away May 28, 2013 in Carrollton, Carroll County, GA at the age of 100. She was born December 20, 1912 in Missoula, Missoula County, MT to Charles Fredrick and Almeda Gertrude (Andrews) Farmer. Elizabeth graduated from the University of Montana in Missoula, MT with a degree in Nutrition. While in college she was a member of the Delta Gamma Sorority. She served her dietetics residence training at Harbor View Hospital in Seattle, WA. After her training she worked at Seattle General Hospital, Salem General Hospital in Salem, OR and later she worked at Lennox Hill Hospital in New York City, NY. Elizabeth enlisted in the US Army Medical Corp as a 1st Lt. where she served as a hospital dietitian at Camp Howze, outside of Dallas, TX. While stationed at Camp Howze, Elizabeth met and married James Wilmar Smith on January 20, 1944 in Love County, OK. They were blessed with a daughter Susan Elizabeth and a son James Wendell Smith. James and Elizabeth lived in Gainesville, TX until after World War II, when they moved back to James's hometown of Carrollton, GA. They built a house on Brown Street where Elizabeth lived until she moved to The Oaks of Carrollton Assisted Living in Carrollton, GA. When James passed away in 1983 after 38 years of marriage, Elizabeth became an active volunteer for the Red Cross Bloodmobile, meals on wheels, head start, Cancer Society and as a grandparent in the city kindergarten class. For 48 years Elizabeth enjoyed teaching the three year old Sunday School class at the Carrollton First Methodist Church. In this position she taught and influenced the lives of hundreds of young children in Carrollton. She received the John W. Tanner Jr. Excellence in Christian Education Award for her years of loyal service. For years Elizabeth enjoyed her garden and volunteering at the Salvation Army every Tuesday until she was 94. For 25 years Elizabeth would knit and stuff small dolls to be taken to Tanner Memorial Hospital for the children who would come to the emergency room. Elizabeth was very proud to be a member of the Abraham Baldwin Chapter of the National Society of Daughters of the American Revolution. In addition to her late husband and parents, Elizabeth is preceded in death by a sister Winnifred Reading, who was from Santa Rosa, CA and nephews J.M., Ronald, and Donald Meigs. She is survived by a daughter Susan Elizabeth (Jack) Carr of Yakima, WA, and a son, James Wendell (Marie Cook) Smith of Bowdon, GA; her grandchildren, Darrick (Joelle Emerson) Carr of Covington, WA, Travis Carr of Yakima, WA, James William Smith of Griffin, GA, Michael (Donna Adair) Smith of Griffin, GA, Tania (Danny) Fountain of Rockmart, GA; her great grandchildren are Kylee Carr of Kennewick, WA, Mikayla, Cameron and Kaitlyn Carr of Covington, WA, Alex, Jacob, Madison and Daniel Fountain of Rockmart, GA. Elizabeth is survived by two special people who were like daughters to her, Terrye Presnal Proctor of Orange Park, FL, and Helen House of Douglasville, GA, Ben and Angie Tatro of Kennewick, WA, and their children Jacob, Hannah and Abby and numerous nieces and nephews. We would like to say a special thanks to our cousins Brenda Hudson and the late Ronald Meigs who went at least three times a week to see our mother, take her to the doctor and get anything that she needed. Also, to Rita Miller, Mary Mellon and the staff at The Oaks Assisted Living who has been there for our mother for the last five years. The family would also like to thank the caregivers Latonia Williams, Patsy and Edward Rice, Stephanie Hasty-Davis, Clara Anderson, Brenda Taylor, Gail Cobb, Jessica Hudson, Brenda Hudson, Alice Geeter, and Tabitha Varner. Graveside services will be Saturday, June 8 at 11 A. M. at Stripling Chapel United Methodist Church Cemetery with Rev. Cindy Conner officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Saturday morning from 9:30 till funeral hour. The American Legion Post #143 and the Abraham Baldwin Chapter DAR will provide honors.
