Obituary for Dr. Thomas "Tommy" Padgett

Thomas Clinton (Tommy) Padgett, age 78, of Carrollton, GA, passed away peacefully on December 23, 2018, surrounded by his loving family. He was born December 18, 1940, in Savannah, GA, to the late Jewette Mercedes Padgett and Mary Gillingham Padgett . He married Marion Joyce Hilliard on June 1, 1963 and was married to her until her death in 2016.

Tommy is survived by his children Thomas C. Padgett, Jr, and his wife Lannah; Candace Isehower and her husband Wayne; and Christi Bell; one brother Raymond Padgett, and his wife Boo and children Joel and Jennifer; 4 grandsons John and Thomas Padgett, Jack Bell, and Evan Wages; 5 granddaughters, Joy Dodson, Lindsay Padgett, Madison Wages, and Taylor and Sarah Bell; and seven great-grandchildren.

Tommy and Joy spent the first twenty years of their lives together living at numerous Air Force Bases around the United States. They settled in Carrollton in 1982 and have been residents ever since. After graduating from Glennville High School, he attended The University of Georgia where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Music. He later went on to earn his Master’s Degree in Economics from The University of North Dakota, and his DBA in Management from Florida State University. His career included twenty years of military service with the United States Air Force, and he then became a professor at the University of West Georgia. He finished his career as the Chairman of the Business department at UWG.

Among his favorite interests were playing golf, playing his guitar, composing original songs, and singing in both the church choir and the local community chorus. He was a long time member of Kiwanis and attended Carrollton First United Methodist Church. Tommy was extremely proud of all of his grandchildren and enjoyed spending time with each of them. Some of his most favorite memories were time spent with family and friends at Lake Martin, Alabama.
