Mr. Chestene Vaughn, 78 of Carrollton died Tuesday, December 25, 2007. Mr. Vaughn was born in Carroll County on April 17, 1929, the son of the late Taylor Franklin Vaughn and Nancy Jane Shelnutt Vaughn. Mr. Vaughn was a building contractor, noted for his meticulous building skills. Everyone considered him to be an excellent brick mason, carpenter and plumber. He was then hired early in his career by then city manager Dudley Crosson. He was Superintendent of Parks, Maintenance and Construction for the City of Carrollton. He started the downtown beautification projects that included the renovation of the downtown square, planting trees, bricking sidewalks, designing and building various city parks. At home he loved gardening and planting trees on his peaceful farm land. He was a veteran having served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict and was a member of Calvary Baptist Church where he served as a deacon. Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Shirley Wallis Vaughn; daughter, Debra Vaughn of Atlanta; son, Tony Vaughn and Marie Garmany of Carrollton; sister, Louise Crews of Carrollton; brother and sister-in-law, Obie and Creola Vaughn of Waco and many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. Besides his parents he was preceded in death by his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Homer and Eunice Wallis; brother-in-law, Lewis E. Crews; nephew, Larry E. Crews. Funeral services for Mr. Chestene Vaughn will be Saturday, December 29, 2007 at 2 pm from the chapel of Almon Funeral Home with Rev. Kerry Cooke, Rev. Donald Hubbard and Rev. Keith Hancock officiating. Pallbearers will be Scott Vaughn, Bobby Crews, Buck Boykin, Scott Tarpley and Rev. Donald Hubbard and Alvin Capes. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Friday from 6 to 8 pm. Interment will follow in the Carrollton City Cemetery with the American Legion Post # 143 folding and presenting the flag.
