Mr. James O. "Buck" Chavies, 91, of College Street, Carrollton passed away Sunday, August 21, 2011 at his residence surrounded by his loving family and caregivers. Since March 2008, the staff of Robin's Nest- Pam, Renea, Brenda, Olivia, Judy, and Martha- has lovingly and faithfully cared for "Pop"/ Mr. Buck. For over 40 years Lillie Daniel and Clyde Thomas have taken care of Buck and Carol's home and yard. Their dedication over the years, especially these last several as Buck and Carol's health continued to decline, cannot be measured, and the family will be forever grateful. Mr. Chavies was born in Boaz, AL on April 21, 1920, the son of the late James Porter Chavies and Nora Bell Faulkner Chavies. Mr. Chavies was a veteran of the U. S. Navy during WWII where he was awarded the Bronze Star for "participation in the Bombardment and Invasion of the French Coast against strong enemy air and land opposition." He was honorably discharged as a Motor Machinist's Mate First Class where he served in France, England, and Okinawa with the Twenty-eighth U. S. Naval Construction Battalion "Seabees" in 1943-45. Mr. Chavies retired from the Georgia Power Co. As a shift supervisor. He was a member of the Georgia Power Ambassadors, Civitan Club, Carrollton First United Methodist Church, and Adult Friendship Sunday School Class. Survivors include his daughter and son-in-law, Paulette and Donald Slate of Douglasville, son and daughter-in-law, Jimmy and Anita Chavies of Waco, grandchildren, Jason and Karen Slate, Jamie and Stephen Gowen, Kelly Stephenson, Amy Ellington, great grandchildren, Austin and Abby Slate, Libby and Will Gowen, Wes and Ben Stephenson, and Anna-Claire Ellington. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife Carol Finney Chavies the love of his life to whom he was married to for over 69 years (May 23, 1941), brothers, Dewey, Horace, George, and Elbert Chavies, sisters, Dovie Garner, Pearlie Mae Brooks, Girthel Epps, and Mattie Bell Phelps. Funeral services will be Wednesday, August 24 at 2 p. m. from the chapel of Almon Funeral Home with Dr. Dean Milford, Dr. Jimmy Thurman, and Mr. Donald Slate officiating. Pallbearers will be Mike Browning, Mark Browning, Gene Finney, Stephen Finney, Terry Jackson, and Jeffery Jenkins. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Adult Friendship Sunday School Class and Georgia Power Ambassadors. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Tuesday from 6 p. m. until 8 p. m. Memorial contributions may be made to the Carrollton First United Methodist Church Youth Ministry, 206 Newnan Street, Carrollton, GA 30117 or the Church Vocation Scholarship Fund, First Baptist Church, 3566 Veterans Memorial Hwy., Lithia Spring, GA 30122.
