Life Legacy

Jonathan L. Slate, age 46, of the Winston Community in Douglas County, died Saturday, March 19, 2011. He was born December 8, 1964, in Atlanta, the son of Richard R. “Dick” Slate and the late Dr. Virginia Sellers Slate.

Mr. Slate was a 1991 graduate of Georgia State University with a bachelor of music degree. He also attended Brevard Music School and the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.

While a student at Georgia State University, he was employed in the computer lab. He was self-employed as a computer web designer. He was a 22-year member of Tabernacle Baptist Church, Carrollton.

Mr. Slate was a member of Carroll Masonic Lodge 69, Carroll Chapter 406, Order of the Eastern Star, and a member of the Scottish Rite, Valley of Atlanta, Orient of Georgia since 1993. He had played tuba in the Yaarab Shrine Band and sang in the Shrine Chanters. Until his recent illness he played tuba in the Christian Community Orchestra in Douglasville.

Survivors include his father, Richard “Dick” Slate of Winston; uncle, Charles A. Slate of Easley, South Carolina and numerous cousins. He was preceded in death by his mother, Dr. Virginia S. Slate.

The family will receive friends at Almon Funeral Home on Tuesday evening from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m.

Funeral service will be Wednesday, March 23 at 2 p.m. at the chapel of Tabernacle Baptist Church with Dr. Jimmy Gentry officiating.

Interment will be in Westview Cemetery, Atlanta.
