Life Legacy
Mrs. Sara Wortham Yeats, age 91 of Villa Rica, formerly of Carrollton, died Tuesday, November 17, 2009.
Mrs. Yeats was born in Heard County, Georgia on January 7, 1918. She was the daughter of the late Dr. Albert Glenn Wortham, a doctor in Heard County, and Ore Lee Miller Wortham; a sister to the late Mabel Wortham Heard, Fannie Gordon Wortham Owen, Cpt. Albert Glenn Wortham, Jr., Hollis Chilton Wortham; and a devoted wife to her late husband, J. Hugh Yeats.
Mrs. Yeats was an outstanding basketball star in high school as well as a beauty queen. As a college student she proudly wore her letter sweater she earned in basketball and tennis Bessie Tift College, Duke University, and the University of Georgia where she earned her college degree. After graduating from college, she became the beloved and enthusiastic school teacher of numerous classrooms full of lucky children. She was gifted as an artist and had a great love of music, especially playing the piano.
Her Christian family heritage and her faithful Bible study prepared her for a lifelong teaching of children and adults in Sunday School, and was also active as a WMU member and leader in Arlington, Virginia, and here at First Baptist Church of Carrollton. She truly loved her church, pastor, and friends. Her patriotism led her to become a member and serve in the organizations of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the UDC.
Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Rosemary Y. and Larry D. West of Villa Rica; granddaughters, Sara Kathleen West Davis, Christina Reece West; and a niece and several nephews with which she had a strong bond.
