Obituary for Morris Lee Ray

Morris Lee Ray, age 84 of Carrollton, Georgia passed away Sunday, October 8, 2017.

Mr. Ray was born in Jemison, Alabama on March 16, 1933, the son of the late Carey Lee Ray and Euna Belle Wilson. He was a member of Midway Macedonia Church.

He served a distinguished 22 year career in the U.S. Army. His tour of duty carried him to Iceland, Germany and two courageous tours of the Vietnam War. He was awarded numerous medals and honors, retiring in 1975 at the rank of Sgt. Major. He was awarded a Bronze Star Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, Meritorious Service Medal, Good Conduct with Five Bronze Loops, Army of Occupation Medal and Berlin Airlift Devise, National Defense Service Medal and Bronze Star, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Vietnam Service Medal and Bronze Star and Silver Star attachments, Combat Infantryman Badge 1st Award, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Ribbon, Expert Badge and Rifle Bar, Master Parachutist Badge. He was an Infantry Operation and Intelligence Specialist and a Jump Instructor at Fort Benning.

After retiring from the U.S. Army, he began another career with Georgia Power as security supervisor over several power plants, including Plant Bowen in Cartersville and Plant Scherer near Macon.

Survivors include his sons and daughter -in-law, Vincent and Judy Ray of Carrollton, Zachary Ray of Augusta; grandson, Christopher Hicks of Carrollton; sisters and brothers-in-law, Louise and Leo Lowery of Alabaster, Alabama, Tommie and John White of Mountain Brook, Alabama; brother and sister-in-law, Doug and Linda Ray of Jemison, Alabama; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Frances Ray.

The family will receive friends at Almon Funeral Home on Thursday from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m.

Funeral services will be Friday, October 13, 2017 at 2 p.m. from the chapel of Almon Funeral Home with Pastor Steve Schneider officiating.

Pallbearers will be Kris Knowles, Jeff Barron, Jason Moore, Brandon Word, Brian Word and Jason Spruill. Honorary pallbearers will be the staff of Caretakers of West Georgia and Tanner Home Health staff.

Interment will be in Carroll Memory Gardens with U.S. Army providing military honors.
