Obituary for Moreland Adams, Sr.

Moreland Adams, Sr., age 84, passed away at his home in Carrollton, surrounded by his loving family on Sunday, June 4th, 2017. He was born April 7th, 1933 in Carrollton, Georgia to Raymond and Erma Adams. On September 21st, 1951, he married his sweet heart Nellie Walker. Together they had five children. For more than 46 years he worked at the Atlanta Gas & Light Company. He retired on October 24th, 1998 from his job as a Distribution Supervisor. Known for his caring spirit, unwavering values and abundant generosity, he was a role model, not only for his children, but for so many young men and women in the community. He was a member of St. John Pure Holiness Church of God in Carrollton for more than 50 years where he served as a Trustee.

An advocate for peace, justice and social equality, Moreland was an organizer and leader in the voter registration movement in Carroll County during the 1960’s. His strong faith tradition and commitment to service shaped who he was as a person and the influence he had on his family, friends and community. His special interest and hobbies included gardening, photography and fishing. He was happiest when taking care of his grandchildren, barbequing with loved ones or working in service, as the consummate repairman, for friends and neighbors.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 65 years, Nellie Adams, two daughters Mercedine Harrison, and Sharon (Connell) Walker; and by his three sons, Steve, Gregory and Moreland Jr., a loving sister, Janet (Calvin) Echols, a brother Jack (Marilyn) Adams, a brother-in-law Jimmy (Willie Mae) McCoy, a sister-in-law Francis Holts, and lifelong friends and cousins Samuel Wyatt, and Izell (Ella) Redwine. Additionally, he is survived by nine grandchildren, thirteen great grandchildren, two great-great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. His brother Raymond Adams Jr. preceded him in death.

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, June 10th, 2017 at First Baptist Church, 563 Old Bremen Road, Carrollton, Georgia 30117. Burial will follow at West Georgia Memorial Park, Carrollton, Georgia.
