Obituary for Bobby Odell Baker

Bobby Odell Baker passed away on Thursday, March 30, 2017 in Atlanta nursing home after a brief illness. He was born in Woodville, Tennessee on November 27, 1933. He was the son of the late Leander and Myrtle Baker.

At an early age he joined the U.S. Navy serving 3 tours on Navy Destroyers during the Korean War. He attained the rank of Machinist's Mate First Class. While he was stationed at Long Beach, California he met and dated his future wife Lonnie Jo Dunn. They later married in February of 1953.

After leaving the Navy he worked for Mobil Chemical in Redondo Beach, California. He moved with his family to Santa Maria, California to work with his brother Wayne Baker at Standard Oil. He worked as a pumper until the Columbia Record Plant opened. He worked for Columbia Records in the Boiler Room. The company expanded its plant to Carrollton, Georgia allowing him to move there as Production Supervisor. Staying on when Sony Records division until his retirement of 32 years.

He was an avid hunter and fisherman. Later his interest turned to golf and gardening. He took great pride in his garden and keeping his neighborhood supplied with vegetables. He was also known as Mr. Bob "the man who could fix anything".

Bobby belonged to several organizations including the Masons and Elks at the Santa Maria Chapters and Carrollton Elks. He later joined the American Legion.

He is survived by his sister Maydene Cox, his daughter Jo Ann Baker Caliguri and son Bobby O. Baker, granddaughter Courtney Chacon (Felipe Chacon) and four great-grandchildren, Nicholas, Annissa, Alyssa, and Brandan, and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Lonnie Baker, sisters Vernie Wilson, Clara Naylor, Dorthy Ferrante, Sandie Hatch, and brothers, Wayne and Clarence Baker.

His story telling and sense of humor will be missed by his family.

Service will be held at Almon Funeral Home on Saturday, April 22, 2017.

Visitation/Viewing 2pm - 3pm

Service 3pm - 4pm

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association Georgia Chapter, 41 Perimeter Center East, Suite 550, Atlanta, Georgia 30346.
